Keys locked in the car in Phoenix

Opening a locked car takes a locksmith a few minutes, and Fixr's national range is $80 to $150. In the Valley, though, the clock that matters is the heat inside the car, and the first question is who or what is in there.

Anyone inside? Dial 911

A child or an animal in a closed car is a rescue for firefighters, in March as much as in July. Arizona's 2017 hot car law gives a bystander who breaks a window to save them some protection, if they follow its steps. The law and the steps.

Check what you already pay for

Look at your auto insurance card for a roadside number. A motor club membership or a premium credit card may include lockouts too. Many cars from recent years can be opened from the maker's phone app. And if a spare sits at home in Ahwatukee while you are stuck at Desert Ridge, ask whether someone can bring it before you pay for a call-out.

Valley lockouts that run long

  • Trailhead lots. Echo Canyon, Piestewa Peak, the South Mountain lots and the Sonoran Preserve trailheads in north Phoenix are a long way off most service routes, which can raise the trip charge. Ask on the phone, then find shade and drink water while you wait.
  • Parking structures. Downtown and at Sky Harbor, give the level and row and ask whether the van fits under the clearance bar.
  • A fob that quit. If the fob battery died rather than the key getting locked in, the fix may be a coin cell or reprogramming. Heat and fobs.

Have this ready

Year, make and model; the exact spot; your ID. The registration can stay in the glove box. Mention it on the call and the locksmith will check it once the door is open.

Questions people in Phoenix ask

Can a locksmith open my car without damage?

Nearly always. They use air wedges and long-reach rods built for the job. A coat hanger or slim jim can snag wiring and side airbags in the door of a modern car, so leave it to the tools.

Will my insurance pay for a lockout?

If roadside assistance is on your policy, a lockout is usually covered. Ring the number on your insurance card before you call anyone else.
