About Tempe
Tempe is boxed in by its neighbors, so it grows up rather than out, around Arizona State University, Mill Avenue and Tempe Town Lake. 58% of households rent and 41% moved in during 2020 or later (Census ACS), the most of any city we cover, which follows the school year: a big wave of keys changes hands every August. Many apartments near campus have their own lockout policy and fee, so the leasing office is the first call. South of the US 60, in the Kyrene neighborhoods, it is mostly owner-occupied houses and everyday rekeys and car keys.
Homes in Tempe
ACS 2020-2024 estimates put roughly 86,182 housing units in Tempe city. Renters occupy 58% of them; 41% of households arrived in 2020 or after; 6% of the buildings went up before 1960. When most residents rent, a lockout usually starts with a call to the leasing office or landlord, since they own the hardware.
Buildings with 10 or more units hold 33% of the housing. Rekeying after a move · Replacing car keys

Locksmith services in Tempe
The process
- Tell us the problem. Reach us by phone or text or through the form. Give the ZIP, say what is locked, and say how soon.
- One Valley lock business gets in touch. You hear the company's registered name and a single dollar figure with the drive already counted.
- Yes or no is yours. Nothing starts until you agree, and a door price above the phone price is grounds to send them away.
Tempe questions
Do you cover all of Tempe?
Yes. Whoever phones you back checks that your street falls inside their service area before booking a visit.
Will I know the price before work starts?
Yes. We ask each lock business we refer to for a phone total that already counts the trip, and for that same figure when they arrive. A higher number at the door means you can send them away.
Are locksmiths licensed in Arizona?
No. Arizona has no state locksmith license. Title 32 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, which sets up every licensed profession from barbers to contractors, has no chapter for locksmiths, and Phoenix doesn't add one. The one state license that can touch lock work is a contractor license from the Registrar of Contractors: under A.R.S. 32-1121, a job of $1,000 or more in parts and labor, or one that needs a building permit, generally calls for a licensed contractor. A lockout or a rekey is nowhere near that. What you can check is the business itself: its name on the Arizona Corporation Commission's eCorp search, a written total before work, and an itemized invoice with that name on it.
