Lock changes and deadbolts in Phoenix

A rekey changes which key works. A lock change puts new hardware on the door, and it costs more. Fixr's range for changing locks is $150 to $550; Thumbtack reports $203 to $240 to install a new lock.

Signs you need new hardware

The key grinds or the thumb turn feels gritty. The door has only a knob lock and no deadbolt, or a flimsy builder-grade one. You want a keypad. Or the lock got pried or kicked in a break-in, which still happens a lot here: Phoenix police logged 4,525 burglaries in 2025, 1.4 times the national rate per resident (FBI).

Check the door before you blame the lock

Try the deadbolt with the door standing open. If it slides freely there and drags only when the door is shut, the lock is fine and the door has moved. That happens a lot in the Valley. Doors facing west soak up afternoon heat and swell, wood frames dry and shrink, and in the central historic districts the houses have been settling for decades; around the Capitol and Grant Park, 50% of homes date from before 1960 (Census ACS). Shifting or filing the strike plate is a cheaper fix than a new deadbolt, and a good locksmith checks for it first.

What the grades mean

Residential locks are graded under ANSI/BHMA standards for durability. In This Old House's summary, Grade 1 hardware is tested to 800,000 cycles, Grade 2 to 400,000 and Grade 3 to 200,000. Many owners choose Grade 2 or better for an entry door.

Questions people in Phoenix ask

Can I keep my key when I change locks?

Often you can. New locks of the same brand can be pinned to your current key, or every door can be set to one fresh key.

Do I need a permit to change a lock?

Swapping a lock on an existing door needs none. Replacing the door or wiring an electric strike is another matter, so ask whoever is doing that work.
