Key copies in Phoenix
Copying a regular house key is a few dollars of work, $10 to $25 by Fixr's count. Car keys with a chip take more, and the fob for a downtown apartment tower may not be copyable at all.

Easy copies
Ordinary house keys and padlock keys can be cut from your original in a couple of minutes. The key to a mailbox you own is usually just as simple. Mailbox locks.
Harder ones
A car key with a transponder chip has two halves. Cutting the metal blade is quick, but the chip only works once it has been paired with the car, which takes programming equipment. Fob programming.
Restricted keys used in offices and some high-security home locks can be cut only by the locksmith who controls that keyway, and only when the owner shows an authorization card. That is the whole point of them.
Building fobs are the last group. In 85004, 70% of homes are in buildings of 10 or more units (Census ACS). The fob for those lobbies and garages is registered to the building, which can deactivate a lost one and issue a replacement, so the front desk is the place to ask.

Questions people in Phoenix ask
My copied key doesn't work. Why?
A copy made from a worn key inherits the wear, and every generation gets worse. A locksmith can cut a fresh key from the lock's code instead.
Can I copy a key marked Do Not Duplicate?
Many shops will refuse, though the stamp has no legal weight. On a lock you own, a rekey puts you back in charge of every copy.
