Our analysis of federal public data
Phoenix lock and heat data, ZIP by ZIP
Phoenix lock calls follow three local facts. First, summers are getting hotter: Sky Harbor's yearly count of 110°F days now averages 37, over double the 17 recorded in 1995 to 2004, so a child or dog in a locked car is an emergency for more of the year and fob batteries die young. Second, people move a lot. Roughly four households in ten rent and three in ten arrived after 2019, which leaves a great many unaccounted-for keys. Third, car theft: 9,364 vehicles were taken in 2023, and plenty of drivers here have paid for a key they never lost.
Type one of the 40 Phoenix ZIP codes in the table below (ZIPs under 3,000 homes count in the totals but get no row) to see its numbers and what they mean for keys and locks.
Days at 110°F or hotter each year, Phoenix Sky Harbor
Seven findings
- Twice the 110°F days. In 1995 to 2004, Sky Harbor saw 17 days a year reach 110°F. Over 2016 to 2025 the yearly average was 37, with 2024 on top at 70. On top of that come 120 days a year of 100°F or more and 19 nights a year that stayed at 90°F or warmer. The decade's peak reading: 119°F, June 2017. Child or pet in a hot car.
- A renter city. 244,062 of the 536,164 households in our 41 ZIPs rent, or 46%. Downtown Phoenix (85004) leads at 79%. Renters' locks belong to the landlord, which makes the leasing office the natural first call. Apartment lockouts.
- Recent arrivals everywhere. 164,853 households (31%) have lived in their current home only since 2020 or later, and every one of those moves left keys and garage codes behind with sellers, former tenants, agents and tradespeople. Rekeying after a move.
- Old middle, new rim. City-wide, 16% of homes predate 1960. In Maryvale central (85031) that figure is 54%, and around the Capitol and Grant Park 50%. Up in Norterra the median home was built in 2009. Central neighborhoods call about worn original locks; the northern edge calls about keypads and smart deadbolts.
- Downtown lives in towers. ZIP 85004 has 70% of homes in buildings of 10-plus units, and 79% of its households rent. The building controls those fobs and entry doors.
- Car theft rose, then fell. From 7,777 thefts in 2010, Phoenix climbed to 9,364 in 2023, a rate of 564 per 100,000 people against 326 for the US. The 2025 count of 5,932 is 37% below that peak and 1.8 times the national rate. Glendale's own peak was 1,565 in 2023. Car stolen or keys taken.
- Burglaries cut by more than half. From 15,626 in 2010 down to 4,525 in 2025. That works out to 268 per 100,000 residents, roughly 1.4 times the US figure of 195.
